The Hoard of Trustees ol The Solomon It. Guggenheim Foundation established the Guggenheim international Award in painting in 1SSG when it provided that a single grant ol $10,000 and a series oi preliminary awards oi $1,000 each were to be presented every two years to paintings selected by juries oi internationally distin- guished experts in the field ol contemporary art.
The awards, created to further the desire of the founder for the "promotion and encouragement of art and education in art and the enlightenment ol the public, especially in the Held of art," are designed to stimulate public interest in contemporary painting and to encourage artists throughout the world. To be eligible a painting must have been completed no earlier than three years prior to Janu- ary S of the award year and exhibited publicly within two years oi that date.
National and Extra National juries appointed by the International Association oi Art Critics, International Council oi Museums and the International Association of Plastic Arts choose the prelimi- nary award recipients and lovr additional paintings. From these, the international Jury selects the painting which will receive the 910,000 grant.
This year the International Award is presented to Netherlands artist Biuret Appel's WOMAN WITH OSTRICH, chosen irom among 131 paintings submitted by 27 juries. The International Jury, at its discretion, has decided to present Honorable Mention Awards to 1960 NEW YEAR WALL: NBGB1T by the American artist Erunz Kline und to WORK Bi by Yoshishige Saito ot Japan. An Honorable Mention is also being awarded to Canada for the "best balanced group of paintings" submitted lor consideration.
The Solomon ft. Guggenheim Foundation is most grateful to the members of the International Jury: Nobuya Abe, Pierre Courthion and W.J. SI. SB. Sandberg. St is likewise deeply grateful to Madame S. Gille-SBelafon for her effective chairmanship of the International Liaison Committee, to the Committee members and to the interna- tional organisations whose collaboration made possible the selec~ tion and final judging of the chosen pictures. The President and Trustees are especially thankful to Gordon St. Washburn, Director of Fine Arts, at the Carnegie Snstitute, who selected the paintings for this exhibition and who graciously agreed to hang them.
Finally, especial thanks are due to Mrs. Louise Averill Svcndsen for her aid to Mr. Washburn and for her work in the compilation of this catalogue, and to Mrs. Sheila More Ogden, Orrin IS. Riley, and the other members of the staff, for their aid in the preparation of the exhibition.
